Doing my thesis on the Chinese diaspora (with some deconstructing white privilege thrown in) means reading Tumblr = research. As is going to Chinatown when I’m in Toronto in a few weeks. Basically this thesis is my dream.
In the instances when POC say shit like ‘Oh I can’t stand white folk’ or ‘Damn white people’, they aren’t saying ‘Oh I think they are inferior, I want to humiliate them, abuse them, enslave them and wipe out their people!’, they’re saying ‘Damn, after a couple hundred years of white people thinking I’m inferior, humiliating me, abusing me, enslaving me, and trying to wipe out my people, I don’t wanna deal with them.’ The context is completely different.

I need a tag for posts directly relevant to my thesis. Chinese-Cubans/racial deconstruction in historical narrative, woo!

This morning Debi and I practiced in Central Park, near Bethesda. She helped me A LOT—my posture was all wrong, so now I know how to keep from falling and how to stand so I actually move, hooray! We skated back and forth between the benches on either side of a wide walkway, which luckily was in the shade. I’m tired and gross but so energized, and I feel much better about skating. Yesterday I was like “…how will I ever go derby speed…or be able to stand without falling…?” But today I was starting to actually skate. Jeff’s going to go out there with me tomorrow so he can roller blade like a pro while I skate back and forth. And do many, many squats and lunges…
thedeepwaters reblogged your post: Adventures in Roller Derby: Day 1
Go you! Starting roller derby is so exciting. You’ll start improving by leaps and bounds before you know it. :) Keep getting on those skates!
Aww thanks! I’m going out again tomorrow. I know if I don’t have some skate time every day, I’ll convince myself it’s too hard and talk myself out of it :)
Just tried my derby skates for the first time and it was terrifying and amazing. I could barely stand without falling down at first. Eventually I was able to skate a few feet and back without falling, but wobbling like crazy. It really seems impossible that I’ll ever be able to handle derby, but getting there would be such an accomplishment and really really fun. I’ll practice a little each day and hopefully I won’t be totally a mess by the time Rec League starts in a few weeks.

Actress Traci Thoms has appeared on television’s Cold Case and Harry’s Law as well as on the movie screen in Rent and The Devil Wears Prada. But to superhero fans she may be most known for her role as Etta Candy in the much maligned 2011 pilot of Wonder Woman.
The race blind casting of Thoms…
